The Poreč hotel company Plava Laguna owns the peninsula where the Galijot Hotel is located. A colony of Eurasian red squirrels lives there, with whom my husband Dražen and I have been interacting since September 2020. Like most beautiful stories, this one began quite by chance with our encounter with these charming creatures, slender in body, with magnificent tails, incredible speed, and reflexes.
We are grateful for the understanding and assistance of former director Željka Despot and current director Marko Fabris, who have recognized our efforts in caring for sick and injured squirrels. We receive the necessary support from the staff, which we hope will continue and expand. Not all rescue attempts are successful, of course, but we strive to make as many as possible.
Special mention goes to the horticulture workers, especially Ive, who maintains five water stations for the squirrels and other small animals inhabiting "Squirrel Forest," as we have named the area around the Galijot Hotel, during the summer.
Additionally, we must acknowledge the Poreč firefighters, who "step in" to clean the water stations outside the tourist season. It is comforting to know that we can rely on someone's help when our little critters need something. We would be delighted if other volunteers came forward to help cover squirrels in other parts of Poreč and the surrounding areas.
